The Story of The Tree
The Story of The Tree
Every year, 10 million hectares of forest are destroyed worldwide, while only 5 million hectares manage to recover in the same amount of time.
This attitude towards the environment - and trees in particular - is largely due to a lack of understanding of how similar we really are. Trees are living beings just like us: they can communicate, support one another, and share stories.
Each tree’s bark is unique, and different events from its past remain on its trunk like scars. A broken branch, a parasite invasion, or holes left by a woodpecker can damage the top layer of bark, which is often covered with wrinkles like human skin. The tree immediately begins to heal these wounds by growing bark.
Using recycled paper and homemade paint, I allow the tree to tell its story by printing various sections of its bark, revealing events from its past.
